There are a lot of things that can go wrong with your boat engine. Some are easy to fix, while others require the expertise of a certified, highly-rated outboard mechanic. It’s important to ask for recommendations from those who know the engines best – your full-service dealer, top-rated outboard engine repair, and even the engine manufacturer themselves. Manufacturers want to keep their customers happy, so they’re usually willing to point you in the direction of top-rated outboard mechanics.
Fuel issues:
A clogged or blocked fuel filter can quickly cause an engine to run rough and eventually stop running altogether. It’s a good idea to replace the filter regularly and use fuel stabilizers to minimize the effects of ethanol on the fuel system.
Ignition switch problems:
Loose or corroded terminals can also cause engine starting problems. It’s a good idea to clean the battery terminals regularly and coat them with anti-corrosion spray. Carrying a wire brush and Corrosion X spray is another good idea to keep onboard for quick fixes.
The propeller is vibrating:
Sometimes it’s easy to see that a prop has been hit or dingd by a towrope, fishing line or other object. But other times the damage is less obvious — like when a nick or gouge creates imbalance and vibration, or when the hub of the prop has been worn down. It’s important to have the prop inspected and repaired by a pro, especially if it starts vibrating. If the hub is damaged, it could be time to consider a new prop.
